Album Review : Feel
the power / Don Wilson
CDs don’t come much more home-grown than this. Kapiti Coaster
Wilson wrote all the songs, provided most of his own backing ( and
brought in some slick mates to fill any gaps ), recorded the disc
at his home studio and even illustrated the CD cover and booklet
with reproductions of his own excellent paintings.Wilson is best-known these days as a solo performer, but his musical
CV stretches back to 1970s hit-makers The Heartbreakers and beyond.
The songs on this album, he says, span a decade or more. “They
have been begging to be set free and I am happy finally to be able
to oblige them.Wilson has much in common with another accomplished local singer-songwriter,
Stephen Bell-Booth. Both write well-crafted, reflective songs which
they deliver with understated but assured musicianship. Unlike Bell-Booth,
Wilson doesn’t convey a religious message, but his songs have
a certain spiritual quality nonetheless. This mellow, soft-rock
album is a labour of love that deserves to sell better than it will.
